  • Disaster averted.

Today our extended family had Thanksgiving dinner in at the local community center.  I decided to take Fable in for pony cart rides.  The arena is close enough that I left her there while we were eating.

Here she is, ready to leave for the arena.

Headed into town.  It's about two miles from our house.

    pony 003

I don't know exactly what this was, but it was definitely a carnivore, according to Fable.

    pony 004

Dropped Fable off at the arena, and as I was walking the last couple of blocks my sil saw me and picked me up.  When we got there we found this.  You can't see them all, there are at least two others crammed into the trunk there.

The cook and her oldest dd.  She did this whole thing herself.  Ham, turkey, dressing, wild rice, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, salads and desserts.

After I ate so much that I hurt I had dd drop me off at the arena and I brought Fable back to the square.

The kids were all playing in the playground, and we took turns, two at a time.  Each time we'd ride off in a different direction in town, make a big circle, swing back and switch little riders.  We only had one bad moment when a huge dog ran from his pen into an adjoining shed and jumped at the windows.  Fable stopped dead in her tracks, (that's how she spooks) and didn't want to go on.  After thinking about it a minute and seeing that no dog came through the window she went on.

I was gathering children for a picture, reached into my pocket and discovered my camera was gone.  Dang!  Hoping that it had fallen where Fable stopped short I unloaded children and trotted back.  It was there, undamaged.  But on my way back for pictures I glanced down and noticed a problem.

My wheels are supposed to look like this....

    pony 022

One of mine looked like this.  The bolt (or nut or whatever it's called) had come off, and my wheel was just about to fall off the cart.  I mean big time wobbly I got off just in time to avoid being tumped out.  Thank goodness there were no children in with me, although Fable didn't bat an eye.

Bud and Taylor brought the trailer into town and we loaded up pony and cart and had a happy ending.  Except that I'm still in pain from so much food.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • We had a guest rider today...........

A friend's granddaughter came over today to meet Jedi.  We saddled her up and had a practice run or two around the yard.sw 004

There was a quick moment there when Jedi tested the grazing bounderies, but she discovered that this girly knew what she was doing.

    sw 008

We took a short ride around the pasture, with me on Hacinta, (who btw, has had a relapse of her mud training...gah!)and the pony team did very well.  There was even some trotting, and they rode off by themselves just to prove they could.

When we got back there was a surprise waiting in the chicken house.  Daisy Mae had five brand new babies underneath her.  Perfect timing!

    sw 013

Now here's a girl who appreciates chickens.  Obviously not her grandmother's child.

    sw 012

And here are the half grown pluglies.

I have instructed my little visitor in the grand art of begging for a pony.

  • Today's adventure

First off,  for Yip, a fellow driver, this is how I time myself.  I had an old wristwatch that was broken and I fixed it to the cart.  When I start out I always set the clock to 12:00, if I have to get out for any amount of time I pull out the side button, and push it back in when we start up again.

Fable and I headed west today.  I never have gone west with Jedi, there are blind curves and lots of hills,  but somehow I'm more confident with Fable.

    November 2009 005

This is just west  and north of the house, the land right in front of us has great cart trails,  and the owners wouldn't mind us driving on them, but now it's hunting season, and not a smart place to be.

    November 2009 006

Heading west again, here's the steep hill we have to take.  Fable did really well.

    November 2009 009

When we passed a neighboring farm one of the horses there checked us out.  The guy that farms here has a team of Belgians that he still uses to work his little house garden.  This isn't one of the Belgians,  Quarter horse maybe?

The steers in the adjoining pasture thought we were very interesting.

    November 2009 015

Our destination.  The guys were here working cattle, and so Fable waited patiently while I went to see what was going on.

  • Creature Feature

Taylor and Kaley found this and brought it home.  I can only assume it's name is Junior because that's what they name 90% of the things they find and bring home.  It worries me sometimes that they might both name all their children Junior.  I'll think about that later.

    Tom was interested.

    October 2009 001

    Tick was interested.

    October 2009 003

Actually, I was too.  Look at the claws on that fella.

    October 2009 007

Thank goodness it moves slower than a possum.
